If your furnace or air conditioner will not start, here are some non-technical items you can check and possibly avoid the cost of a service call.

Furnace Start-Up

Clean or replace air filter.
Check gas pilot; follow instructions on furnace if lighting is required. This does not apply to gas furnaces with spark ignitions or to homes with electric heat.
Check switch in power line to furnace; it should be in the "on" position.
Set thermostat to desired temperature and indicate "heating". Set fan switch to "on" if continuous air movement is desired. Set fan switch to "auto" if automatic operation is desired.

If your heating system fails to operate properly:
Check thermostat for proper setting.
Check for dirty filters.
Check that the blower door on the furnace is properly seated. Some furnaces have an interlock switch that stops the unit from operating if the door is not installed properly.
Be sure the power to the unit is "on".
Check for tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse.
