New Jersey Summers and the Case for Reliable Cooling

Between June humidity, mid-July heat waves, and August nights that barely cool down, New Jersey summers put real demand on residential air conditioning.

A system that barely made it through last summer may not hold up this year. Older units lose efficiency, undersized systems run constantly without keeping up, and deferred maintenance leads to failures when you need cooling most.

Princeton Air has installed and serviced AC systems across Cherry Hill, West Windsor, and surrounding communities for decades. That experience matters because proper sizing depends on more than square footage. Older homes retain heat differently, additions and finished basements change demand, and local conditions affect how your system performs during peak summer heat.

What to Expect When You Call Us About Air Conditioning

You know the call is worth making when the person on the other end of the phone takes your situation as seriously as you do.

Your experience with an air conditioning project should feel easier, not harder, than it did the last time you dealt with a home services company.

You describe what the system is doing, when the problem started, and how quickly you need help. You get a real arrival window, not a vague “sometime tomorrow.” You hear from us again before the technician shows up, so you’re not left wondering.

Your technician walks you through what they’re finding, in language that actually means something to you. You understand what’s happening with the system, you see your real options, and you make the decision on your terms. No pressure, no pitch before you’ve had a chance to think.

Your floors stay covered, your space stays clean, and the system gets tested at the thermostat and at the registers before anyone leaves. You know what was done, what to watch for, and when you should expect the next visit.

As a second generation McAllister, now, Princeton customer in Atlantic County, I am pleased to report another successful system installation. This year it is a state-of-the-art Combi water heater and HVAC installation at the seashore. Scheduling occurred with "military precision." The bevy of workers and equipment arrived on time — all friendly and informative. By the second day all done, manual provided & questions answered. Always a good crew to have onsite. Company was also very helpful in scheduling my A/C system maintenance at the same time as all the other work beating the start of the summer season.
Service man Ryan is always very professional and thorough and takes the time to explain whatโ€™s going on with our heating and air-conditioning system.
I waited all day three times for the repairman. I am going to change my service provider.
Technician was very good.
Prompt, polite, informative, professional, thorough
Ryan G arrived promptly to my home to see why my air conditioning unit wasn't working. He clearly explained upfront the charges for diagnosing the problem. He quickly discovered the source of the issue and showed me pictures of the clogged a/c pipe and explained the work he would be doing. After the work was completed, he showed me how much debris he pumped out of the pipe and explained the charges which were very reasonable. I was thoroughly happy with the service that Ryan G provided. His descriptions and instructions were very clear. I would highly recommend Ryan G. & Princeton Air to all !
Our tech Dominic was Great!!
Princeton Air did a great job installing my new Carrier Furnace and A/C system. Devin and Woody were really polite and professional. Great experience and thorough cleanup. Also, Joe was a really professional electrician, and a really nice guy.
Iโ€™m very happy with my new system.
Thank you Princeton Air.
Latrell and Norman two very hard workers ran into situations replacing a compressor on our air conditioning unit but kept us informed as to their progress. It was frustrating for them on hottest day of year but they kept their professional and customer service attitudes up in a pleasant manner. Two excellent maintenance service repair professionals.
Excelente servicio, el tรฉcnico Dominic muy profesional y muy amable. 100% recomendable
Ali was great! We have a very confusing system here at the office and Ali went over and above and let us know what happened, what he did to fix it, and an action plan going forward. He also provided with solutions and recommendations to corporate in his work order, providing me with peace of mind that our company and the people who need to know what is going on.
Back to normal
They sent someone out when my Central Air died in the middle of a heatwave; it turned out to be frozen so they had to return after it thawed, but everything was timely and I felt well taken care of. Dispatchers, office staff and my tech, Cruise, were all excellent. I was up and running by noon!
Very knowledgeable and professional Navien tech.
Maurice Gaines was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and efficient! I've used Princeton Air's services a few times now and it's always been a good experience.
Latrelle did an excellent job
I had issues with my A/C unit that would sporadically not turn on and wouldnโ€™t be able to reach the desired set temperature. I had a service contract with the utility company , who I called out 3 times to fix the issue and each time they couldnโ€™t find anything wrong. This time I called Princeton Air, was able to book online and they came out the next day. Ryan came to my house and listened to the entire history of my A/C issues. He was able to troubleshoot and quickly found there was a wiring issue which he was able to correct that day. He educated me on my unit and explained in detail to me everything he did along the way. Thank you Ryan, you are very talented in your skill.
Maurice was terrific and solved the problem very quickly. I highly recommend Princeton Air.
I like to thank Dylan very much. He came to service my AC unit and he found that it was not in service. The refrigerant had leaked out through the coils. Coils were shot. I would have never thought this being a 2-Year-Old AC unit. But fortunately, I did get a service policy and it was under warranty which saved me. Thank you Joe and Tyler also and the girls in the office are just wonderful and will definitely work with you. I've been with this company for over 20 some years and they've always been professional…
Our Tech Dominic was Awesome!! Thank you so much!!
On time. Completed work on all units … Heater, air conditioner, and hot water heater … Within the time frame.
After a few mishaps, Princeton Air came through and got my AC system running when the temperatures are soaring.

Thanks to Will and my technician, Alberto, for getting everything fixed.
Responsive, knowledgeable, dependable, & honest. Thank you for getting out heat up & running!

Update:10/12/18
Chris S got the heat last year and remembered when he arrived today, asked if it had a problem since. He came back to do a PM on the heater and while he was waiting for me to arrive, he opened up the air conditioner to inspect it and saw the coils were filthy. Took out his hose and cleaned them. Then when done, did the heater PM and then โ€œsaid I just want to verify that ringing noise went away. Your house will cool much faster now!โ€ I really like what Princeton air offers, quality and care, diagnose and fix. Not rushing to get to the next job. Theyโ€™re so good I got the year round service plan.

Update may 2025&2026

Notice a problem with the humidity in my home, called and got a service appointment in the same day. Will D came out and sure enough, confirmed there was a problem, explained what exactly was happening, why it was happening and how to check that it was working correctly. His demeanor was pleasant, he was professional and seemed to be quite knowledge!

AC Repair

An AC that’s short-cycling, blowing warm air, or leaking water across the floor isn’t going to fix itself, and waiting usually makes the repair more expensive, not less.

Princeton Air’s NATE-certified technicians diagnose the actual cause of the problem and complete repairs that restore the system to proper operation.

The most common AC complaint is that the system is running but the air coming from the registers isn’t cold. Causes range from a low refrigerant charge to a failed compressor to a stuck reversing valve. For older homes across Princeton and the surrounding communities with aging central AC equipment, this is one of the most frequent repair calls we see, and our technicians identify the specific cause and address it directly.

A system low on refrigerant can’t cool effectively, and simply topping off the charge without finding the leak guarantees the problem comes back. We use leak detection equipment to find the actual leak location, repair or replace the affected component, and then recharge the system to the manufacturer’s specification.

The compressor is the heart of a central AC system, and when it fails, you know about it. We diagnose compressor problems accurately, distinguish repairable issues from end-of-life failures, and give you the honest picture of whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your specific situation.

A coil that’s iced over is a symptom, not the underlying problem. Causes include low refrigerant, restricted airflow from a dirty filter or blocked return, and failed blower motors. We identify the root cause, restore normal operation, and check for any damage the freeze caused to surrounding components.

An AC system produces condensate during normal operation, and when the drain line clogs, water can overflow into the home. For homes across Trenton and the surrounding area with older condensate management systems, this is a recurring maintenance issue that often shows up first as a water stain on the ceiling below the air handler. We clear the clog, flush the line, and address whatever caused the blockage.

AC Replacement

AC systems last 12 to 15 years on average, and when yours has reached that range, replacement usually delivers better long-term value than repeated repairs.

Our team helps evaluate whether your existing system is worth keeping or whether replacement is the right call.

Central AC units typically last 12 to 15 years with reasonable maintenance. Past that point, parts availability becomes an issue, efficiency drops meaningfully year over year, and the cost of repairs starts to add up. Homeowners in Maplewood and surrounding communities with AC systems from the early 2000s or earlier are often well past the point where replacement delivers better long-term value than continued repair.

When an AC requires multiple service calls in the same cooling season, the core reliability is usually gone. Compressor replacements alone can cost a meaningful fraction of a new system, and paying for a major repair on a system that’s otherwise at end of life rarely works out.

Additions, new windows, finished basements, and other home changes all affect the cooling load. For larger homes across Bedminster and similar communities where renovations or expansions have changed the layout, a system sized for the original home may no longer meet demand. Replacement is the moment to resize based on the current reality.

Electric bills that keep climbing while the house feels less comfortable than it used to is a sign the system is losing efficiency, not that energy prices alone are to blame. Modern high-efficiency AC equipment uses significantly less electricity per unit of cooling delivered, and the difference shows up on monthly bills.

For homeowners thinking about electrification or reducing fossil fuel use, an AC replacement is often the natural moment to consider switching to a heat pump that handles both heating and cooling. We explain the options and help you decide whether a straight AC replacement or a heat pump conversion fits your situation better.

AC Installation

An AC system installed with careful attention to sizing, ductwork, and commissioning will perform reliably and efficiently for years.

Princeton Air’s technicians take time to understand your home before recommending or installing a system.

Proper sizing is the most important part of an AC installation, and it depends on square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure, and household usage patterns. We run a Manual J load calculation rather than guessing from square footage, because an oversized system short-cycles and an undersized system runs constantly without cooling effectively.

Traditional split-system central AC remains the most common installation for homes with existing ductwork. We install high-efficiency central AC systems matched to the ductwork and the specific demand of the home, including the outdoor condenser, the indoor evaporator coil, and all refrigerant and electrical work.

For homes without existing ductwork, additions without duct access, or rooms that need independent temperature control, ductless mini-splits are often the right solution. We install single-zone and multi-zone systems across the service area, including homes in Chatham and similar communities where adding ductwork to an older home isn’t practical.

Modern heat pumps handle both cooling and heating from a single outdoor unit, and for homeowners who want to simplify their mechanical systems or move away from fossil fuel heat, a heat pump often makes sense. For homes in Plainsboro and surrounding communities where electrification is a growing priority, we install cold-climate heat pumps that perform reliably in New Jersey winters while delivering the summer cooling the home actually needs.

A new AC system deserves proper controls. We install and program smart thermostats, zone controls where the home supports zoning, and any additional sensors or controls that improve performance. Proper configuration from day one keeps the system running the way it was designed to.

AC Maintenance

An AC that receives regular maintenance delivers consistent performance, runs more efficiently, and reaches the full end of its service life.

Maintenance isn’t complicated, but skipping it is one of the most common reasons AC systems fail earlier than they should.

Annual maintenance before the cooling season is the single most valuable thing you can do for an AC system. The service covers refrigerant level verification, coil cleaning, electrical component inspection, blower service, condensate drain cleaning, and a full operational test. We serve customers across Franklin and the surrounding area with spring maintenance plans that keep systems ready before summer actually arrives.

Refrigerant doesn’t get consumed in normal operation, so a low charge always indicates a leak somewhere in the system. Annual maintenance verifies the charge is correct and catches small leaks before they become larger problems that affect cooling performance or damage the compressor.

Air filters need replacement on a regular schedule, and the right interval depends on the filter type, the household, and the specific system. We set up filter replacement schedules appropriate to the home. For homeowners in Cranbury and across the service area, consistent filter replacement is one of the single highest-return maintenance items, because restricted airflow causes more AC problems than almost any other single factor.

Both the outdoor condenser coil and the indoor evaporator coil accumulate dirt, pollen, and debris over time. Dirty coils reduce heat exchange efficiency and make the system work harder for less cooling. Annual cleaning restores the coils to proper performance.

Every maintenance visit ends with a function test that verifies the system is actually producing the cooling performance it should. This is the check that confirms everything is working together, not just that all the parts are individually in order.

Why Homeowners Call Princeton Air for Air Conditioning Work

NATE certification is the recognized standard in residential HVAC, and every AC service call we run is led by a NATE-certified technician. That matters because AC diagnosis is specialized work, and the training behind a NATE certification is real.

Most AC systems in existing homes are sized wrong, usually oversized. An oversized system short-cycles, fails to dehumidify properly, and wears out faster than a correctly sized unit. We run load calculations on every installation and replacement, because sizing determines everything else about how the system performs.

A failed AC during a heat wave isn’t something to wait three days for. Our dispatch team prioritizes cooling emergencies during peak summer weather and moves a technician to your home fast. We respond to emergency cooling calls from Montclair down through the rest of the service area when temperatures spike.

Some AC systems can be repaired for another three to five years of service. Some need replacement now. We explain which situation you’re in with the actual math and let you make the call without pressure either way.

Not every home is a central AC home. Some are better candidates for ductless, some benefit from heat pump conversion, and some need a hybrid approach. We install and service all three configurations, and we recommend what fits the home rather than what fits a narrow product line. Homeowners in Howell and similar communities with mixed heating and cooling needs appreciate that flexibility.

AC is one piece of a comfortable, healthy home. We also handle ductwork, humidity control, whole-home filtration, UV air treatment, and ventilation. When any of those affects your AC performance or your comfort, we address it as part of the larger picture rather than treating the AC in isolation.

FAQs About Air Conditioning Services

How long should my AC system last?

Most central AC systems last 12 to 15 years with reasonable maintenance. Ductless systems often reach 15 to 20 years. Heat pumps typically last 10 to 15 years when functioning in cooling mode because they accumulate more run hours working year-round than a dedicated AC does. Regular maintenance meaningfully extends service life, and skipping maintenance often shortens it.

When should I schedule AC maintenance?

Spring is the ideal time for annual AC maintenance, ideally before the first genuinely hot stretch of the year. Scheduling in March through early May means the system is ready when demand actually arrives, and you’re not competing for appointments during the summer rush after everyone’s system has already struggled.

Do I need to replace my ductwork when I replace my AC?

Often no, existing ductwork can stay in place as long as it’s properly sealed, appropriately sized for the new system, and in decent condition. When ductwork is undersized, leaky, or badly damaged, replacement or sealing is part of the scope because the best AC in the world can’t deliver cooling through inadequate ducts.

Is a ductless mini-split right for my home?

Ductless works particularly well for homes without existing ductwork, additions that don’t tie into the main system, rooms that need independent temperature control, and homes where adding traditional ducts isn’t practical. For homes with good existing ductwork and whole-home cooling needs, central AC is usually still the right answer. We evaluate the specific situation rather than pushing one approach.

Should I consider a heat pump instead of traditional AC?

Modern heat pumps deliver excellent cooling performance while also handling heating from the same equipment, which simplifies mechanical systems and often qualifies for federal tax credits and New Jersey Clean Energy Program rebates. For homeowners thinking long-term about electrification or fuel cost volatility, a heat pump is worth considering at the replacement moment. We explain the options and help you decide whether it fits your specific situation.
