Generator Services That Keep Your Home Running

Standby generators are permanently installed outside your home and connected to your electrical system, so when a blackout occurs, the generator kicks in automatically and restores power in seconds.

Our services cover every stage of generator ownership, from selecting the right system for your home through installation, ongoing maintenance, and eventual replacement when the unit has reached the end of its service life.

We work with the full range of generator capacities and fuel types, and we handle the entire project from load calculation through final inspection. A properly sized and professionally installed generator is one of the most valuable investments a New Jersey homeowner can make against power loss. Homes across Morristown and Toms River have come to rely on Princeton Air to make sure the system is ready when the power isn’t.

New Jersey Weather and the Case for Backup Power

Between summer thunderstorms, hurricane remnants, and winter nor’easters, New Jersey’s grid sees real stress every year.

Outages that last hours are common. Outages that last days happen often enough that any homeowner who has lived through one stops viewing backup power as optional. A standby generator keeps the refrigerator running, the heat on in January, the sump pump working when the basement is threatening to flood, and the household routine intact through whatever the weather is doing outside.

Princeton Air has installed and serviced generators across Hopewell, West Windsor, Lawrence Township, and the surrounding communities for decades. That regional experience matters because generator sizing, fuel selection, and placement all depend on the specifics of each home, the local utility infrastructure, and the outages homeowners actually experience in their neighborhood.

How Our Generator Process Works

From the first call to the final startup, we handle the generator project with the care the work deserves.

Our process is designed to deliver a generator that fits your home, installs cleanly, and performs reliably for years.

We start by understanding what you want the generator to power, whether that’s the essential circuits only or the entire home. A professional load calculation determines the actual electrical demand, which drives the sizing decision. Guessing on this step costs homeowners money either in undersized systems that struggle or oversized systems that waste fuel.

Based on the load calculation, we recommend specific generator models that fit your requirements, review the fuel options (natural gas versus propane), and identify the best placement for the unit given your property layout, local code, and noise considerations.

Our licensed electricians handle the full installation, including the concrete pad, fuel line connection, transfer switch, and integration with your electrical panel. We test the system under load, walk you through the operation, and make sure you understand how the generator behaves during an actual outage.

Replaced 22 y/o heater and AC units: super happy from first contact with Weltman to the end of installation. Chris M, Rafael U, and Cesar were a pleasure to work with. Very professional and courteous. Five stars to the whole operation. This comes from a guy who doesnโ€™t like to write reviews.
Michael DeFeo did a great job, great personality and answer all the questions i had about my system. I 100% recommend this company.
After I bought my home, I signed up for the membership program as a precautionary measure and it turned out to be a great decision. Ever since I got a complete AC breakdown which was fixed by Princeton Air technicians, a water heater leak and replacement by Princeton Air in 12h. Let's just say I'm satisfied with the services from them.
The 5 stars is for Allistar !! Thank you Allistar (think thatโ€™s how you spell it) Thanks for comming and helping me out on Tuesday when it was 96 degrees in here and I was melting. Even though I got it replaced in January โ€ฆ Finally somebody that knows what they are doing!!! You are the best ! thanks again for getting it up and running ๐Ÿ‘
Princeton Air always does a great job
Princeton Air personnel provided me with great customer service satisfaction!
I have been a customer with Weltman for years and here recently, Weltman was taken over by Princeton Air. I made an appointment for my seasonal checkup for my air conditioning unit.. Technician Ryan Gobel was dispatched to my home.He came in and was very professional, knowledgeable and tentative to my concerns and he answered all my questions regarding my system..I wanted to change my two zone system back to it's original state as I didn't have 2 units, I have one unit with dual zones. I set up an appointment to have that done. Ryan came back for this appointment to do the work and he had another gentleman he was training by the name of Dayone Brack. They both came in and went right to work. As Ryan changed parts, he showed me the old parts explained the reasons why the part was defective and explained the insulation of the new parts all while training Dayone. After all the work was done, he tested the system to ensure everything was working up to standard. He cleaned up his work area and left my home nice and neat just as he found it. Both Ryan and Dayone even put on shoe coverings without me having to ask. Over all my experience was a good one and I will request Ryan again when it's time for my seasonal maintaince. Keep up the good work Ryan and continue to keep up the excellent customer service. Dayone, good luck with your training and keep up the good work.
Fantastic communication and service quality, they do great work. I have used them for many jobs and would recommend them as the best HVAC vendor in central NJ.
I had an issue with my air conditioner give a call to Princeton air they was very professional and fast respond, love their service
Great job. Worked efficiently. Work area clean
Alberto was great. Super friendly and fixed the problem in no time.
Had a new minisplit system placed. From the initial quote to actual instalation it was very organized and professional. All appointment times given were honored and during the 2 hour windows they would text updates narrowing the actual times for their arrival. Instalation was done in 1 day, for us, and the installers and electrician were very professional during the install and wiring. They were also great about cleaning up after themselves. We just had the three days of 90 plus degrees, this past week, and all our units performed as expected. Incredibly within the 1 degree as promised. This will be my first year not carrying up, and then down again, from our basement the 6 window units I had to place to cool our home. That alone was worth the cost, which was signicant but also very reasonable considering the quality of the outdoor and indoor units used and complexity of the install, in home built in 1947. Thank you Princeton Air!!
Princeton Air technician came out to check out A/C that stopped working yesterday. He went down, checked and diagnosed the problem, and had the air back on within 10 minutes. I recommend this company.

Joe was super thorough and very knowledgeable during his inspection of the commercial HVAC units. I felt informed and well equipped as a potential future tenant. Highly recommend!
As a second generation McAllister, now, Princeton customer in Atlantic County, I am pleased to report another successful system installation. This year it is a state-of-the-art Combi water heater and HVAC installation at the seashore. Scheduling occurred with "military precision." The bevy of workers and equipment arrived on time — all friendly and informative. By the second day all done, manual provided & questions answered. Always a good crew to have onsite. Company was also very helpful in scheduling my A/C system maintenance at the same time as all the other work beating the start of the summer season.
Service man Ryan is always very professional and thorough and takes the time to explain whatโ€™s going on with our heating and air-conditioning system.
I waited all day three times for the repairman. I am going to change my service provider.
Technician was very good.
Prompt, polite, informative, professional, thorough
Ryan G arrived promptly to my home to see why my air conditioning unit wasn't working. He clearly explained upfront the charges for diagnosing the problem. He quickly discovered the source of the issue and showed me pictures of the clogged a/c pipe and explained the work he would be doing. After the work was completed, he showed me how much debris he pumped out of the pipe and explained the charges which were very reasonable. I was thoroughly happy with the service that Ryan G provided. His descriptions and instructions were very clear. I would highly recommend Ryan G. & Princeton Air to all !
Our tech Dominic was Great!!
Princeton Air did a great job installing my new Carrier Furnace and A/C system. Devin and Woody were really polite and professional. Great experience and thorough cleanup. Also, Joe was a really professional electrician, and a really nice guy.
Iโ€™m very happy with my new system.
Thank you Princeton Air.
Latrell and Norman two very hard workers ran into situations replacing a compressor on our air conditioning unit but kept us informed as to their progress. It was frustrating for them on hottest day of year but they kept their professional and customer service attitudes up in a pleasant manner. Two excellent maintenance service repair professionals.
Excelente servicio, el tรฉcnico Dominic muy profesional y muy amable. 100% recomendable
Ali was great! We have a very confusing system here at the office and Ali went over and above and let us know what happened, what he did to fix it, and an action plan going forward. He also provided with solutions and recommendations to corporate in his work order, providing me with peace of mind that our company and the people who need to know what is going on.

Generator Repair

A generator that doesn’t start when the power fails is worse than no generator at all.

Regular use and maintenance catches most problems before they matter, but when a repair is needed, our electricians diagnose the actual cause and complete the work so the system is ready for the next outage.

When a generator fails to start during an outage, the cause ranges from a dead starter battery to a failed transfer switch to fuel supply problems. Our electricians respond to failed-start calls across New Brunswick and the surrounding area, diagnosing the specific issue and addressing it directly rather than just cycling the unit and hoping.

The transfer switch is what detects a utility outage and starts the generator, then switches power back when utility service returns. Transfer switch failures are among the most common generator service calls, and correct diagnosis requires someone who understands both the switch itself and the control logic behind it.

A generator battery sits unused for long periods and still needs to deliver strong starting current the moment it’s called on. We replace batteries on the maintenance schedule the manufacturer recommends and service charging systems that keep the battery ready.

Natural gas and propane generators can develop fuel supply issues, regulator problems, or contamination in the fuel line. For homes in Monroe Township and other areas relying on propane delivery, tank and regulator service is a regular part of generator upkeep. We inspect and service the fuel system, verify proper pressure, and address any concerns that would prevent the generator from running reliably.

Modern standby generators rely on control boards, sensors, and software that manage everything from startup sequencing to load handling. When control faults appear, we diagnose the specific component or programming issue rather than replacing parts until something works.

Generator Replacement

Generators have a real service life, and knowing when replacement makes more sense than continued repair saves homeowners money over the long run.

Our team helps evaluate whether your existing generator is worth keeping or whether replacement delivers better value.

Well-maintained residential standby generators typically last 15 to 20 years. Past that point, parts availability becomes an issue, control systems get outdated, and the cost of repairs starts to add up. Replacement with a current-generation unit usually makes more sense than continuing to repair aging equipment.

When a generator requires multiple service calls in the same year, the core reliability is usually gone. Homeowners in Mount Laurel who rely on their systems through repeated weather events tend to replace before they get burned by a failure at the worst possible moment.

Additions, new HVAC equipment, electric vehicle charging, or home office setups all add electrical load that may exceed the original generator’s capacity. For families in Hamilton Township who’ve expanded their homes over the years, the original generator may no longer handle everything it’s expected to cover, and upgrading to a properly sized unit is the right answer.

Homes converting from propane to natural gas (or considering the other direction) often replace the generator as part of the transition. Modern units designed for your current fuel source operate more efficiently than retrofitted older equipment.

Newer generators offer remote monitoring, better efficiency, quieter operation, and more sophisticated control. For homeowners who want real-time visibility into their backup power system, replacement is how you get those capabilities.

Generator Installation

A generator installed with careful attention to sizing, placement, and integration with your existing electrical and fuel systems will perform reliably for years.

Every installation starts with understanding your home’s specific requirements. Our licensed electricians handle the full process, from load calculation through commissioning.

The right generator size depends on exactly what you want to power during an outage. Whole-home coverage requires different sizing than essential circuits only. For larger homes across Edison and surrounding communities, we run a professional load calculation and recommend equipment that handles the load comfortably rather than running at its limit.

Natural gas generators run on utility gas supply and don’t require a separate fuel tank, which suits most homes with existing gas service. Propane generators work well in areas without natural gas infrastructure and handle extreme cold more reliably than natural gas in certain configurations. We help you choose the fuel that fits your home.

The transfer switch connects the generator to your home’s electrical system and manages the handoff between utility and generator power. Installation involves electrical panel work, proper circuit selection, and integration with the generator’s control system. This is where code-compliant work matters most.

Generators need a stable, level foundation, proper drainage, and adequate clearance from structures. Site planning varies considerably between properties, from compact lots in Plainsboro to larger properties with more placement flexibility. We handle the pad installation and site preparation with attention to the manufacturer’s clearance requirements and your local permit requirements.

Before we leave, we run the generator through a full test cycle, verify automatic startup and transfer, and walk you through normal operation. You understand how the system behaves during an outage and what routine maintenance looks like.

Generator Maintenance

A generator that sits unused for months at a time still needs to start instantly when the power fails.

Regular maintenance is what guarantees that capability. Princeton Air offers generator maintenance plans that keep systems ready season after season.

Annual maintenance covers the core service items the manufacturer specifies, including oil and filter changes, spark plug inspection, battery testing, and a full operational test. We provide annual service for generator owners throughout Cranbury and across the region. Generators that get annual service reach their full service life. Generators that don’t, usually don’t.

The starter battery is the single most common reason a generator fails to start during an outage. We test battery condition and replace batteries on a schedule that accounts for the local climate and the battery type.

Standby generators automatically run a weekly exercise cycle to keep components lubricated and identify problems before an actual outage. We verify the exercise cycle is completing correctly and adjust the schedule when needed.

We inspect fuel lines, regulators, and connections for wear or leaks. For propane systems, we verify tank levels and regulator condition. For natural gas, we check pressure and line integrity.

As a Generac dealer and service provider, we handle factory-specified maintenance on Generac generators with the right parts and the right training. For Generac owners in Hightstown and across our service area, working with an authorized dealer means genuine parts, factory-trained service, and proper handling of warranty work.

Why Homeowners Choose Princeton Air for Generator Work

A generator installation is both an electrical project and a fuel project (gas or propane). Most contractors handle one or the other well. Princeton Air handles both under a single licensed team, which means cleaner projects and no handoff problems between trades.

Oversized generators waste money. Undersized generators fail when they’re needed most. We run professional load calculations on every installation, because a generator is one of the few home systems where the sizing decision determines everything about how it performs.

The transfer switch is where most generator problems actually live. Our licensed electricians install, service, and repair transfer switches as a regular part of our work, which is more experience than most contractors bring to this specific component.

When a major storm hits New Jersey and generators across the region need service, we respond. From coastal communities through inland towns like Westfield, our emergency team is ready during the weather events that make generators matter, not just during business hours on calm days.

Generac is the dominant brand in residential standby generators, and we’re an authorized Generac service provider. That means factory-trained service, genuine parts, and warranty work handled properly.

A generator is a 15 to 20 year investment, and the relationship with the company that installed it matters. Princeton Air stays with the equipment through its full service life, serving homeowners in Bedminster and throughout our service area with maintenance, repairs, and eventual replacement when the time comes.

FAQs About Home Generators

How do I know what size generator I need?

Generator sizing depends on what you want to power during an outage. Whole-home coverage requires more capacity than essential circuits only (typically refrigerator, furnace, well pump, selected outlets). A professional load calculation evaluates your actual electrical demand and recommends a properly sized system, which is more reliable than guessing based on square footage alone.

Should I choose natural gas or propane?

Natural gas generators connect to your existing utility gas line and don’t require a separate fuel tank, which suits most homes with gas service already. Propane works well in areas without natural gas, performs reliably in extreme cold, and provides a fixed fuel supply independent of utility outages. The right choice depends on your existing infrastructure and your preferences around fuel storage.

How long does a generator installation take?

Most residential standby generator installations are completed within one to two days on-site, though the full project from initial consultation through final inspection typically takes several weeks to account for permits, utility coordination, and equipment delivery.

How often does a generator need maintenance?

Annual professional maintenance is the industry standard, and most manufacturers require it to maintain warranty coverage. Between annual visits, the generator’s automatic weekly exercise cycle keeps components lubricated and identifies developing problems before they cause a failure.

Do generators require permits?

Yes, in virtually every New Jersey municipality. Generator installation involves both electrical permits and, for gas or propane systems, fuel permits as well. Princeton Air handles the permitting and inspection process as part of the installation so you don’t have to coordinate it.
