How Your Generator Repair Visit Works

Generator service should be thorough because the equipment is only worth what it delivers during an outage.

A generator visit covers the engine, the electrical components, the automatic transfer switch, and the controls, with a live-load test at the end to confirm the system actually responds during a real outage.

You phone us or submit service online. Our team collects specifics about your generator (brand, approximate age, what symptoms you’re experiencing, whether the unit is under warranty) and confirms an appointment.

Your licensed electrician inspects the generator’s engine, electrical components, automatic transfer switch, and controls. You receive a written quote laying out the repair scope before the electrician starts the work.

Your electrician completes the repair and runs the generator through a full test cycle, including automatic transfer switch operation, to verify the system actually responds correctly to a real outage condition.

Dominic was prompt, efficient, and most importantly, very friendly. He showed me exactly what was wrong and explained why. The fix was just as quick. Thanks Dominic and Princeton Air!
The Tech arrived on time, quickly figured out the problem with my AC and fixed within an hour. Pricing reasonable and professional service. Highly recommend!
Cruise was great! He addressed our AC issue quickly and professionally.
Weโ€™ve always been satisfied with McAllister and our recent experience since the merger has not changed that. We needed a new condenser for the A/C and they had a cost effective solution and were able to install it quickly.
Very efficient and on time
Princeton Air condition was extraordinary!! I received a very fair quote immediately after Inspection of my HVAC systemby their talented technician. Their technicians were prompts, professional, and polite. They installed a new system with precision and followed up Professionally. Totally proud to work with Princeton.!!
Ryan G came by and provide tips and recommendations so thorough and with full clarity that I believe will benefit in the long haul. Because of this, I was confident to re-sign up for their maintenance program. He was a true professional who is highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic with the work that he is called to do.
Jose and Corey were a great team and genuinely seemed to care about solving our issues.
I had A/C installed in May, but waited to write a review to see how effective the units can be once it's hot out. Now that I've gone through a couple high temperature days where I turned the mini splits on, I can post a review that I am completely satisfied with the installation by Princeton Air Conditioning and the ease of usage of units. I also will add that it was a pleasure to have Mike C. and Christian J. on the job; they, along with the crews that were on site over the course of the two days, were professional, communicative and upfront. I'd recommend this company to anyone looking for services.
Professional and friendly staff
Air conditioning wasn't working and they came out and got it fixed within a day. Ryan did a great job making sure everything was up and running quickly.
The job was done smoothly and efficiently and right on time
Ryan G got our old air conditioner working again quickly during a bad heat wave and, when we were ready, he explained all our options very well and laid the groundwork to make it easy for us to have installed a new air conditioner. Plus he rescued our cat three times when our cat tried to get out through the garage. He was very kind to all our pets and to us. Thank you, Ryan G!
Dominic was extremely pleasant, professional, and thorough,. He was also quite efficient. He quickly diagnosed the situation and was able to correct it. He also took the time to patiently explain my thermostat to me. Then he signed me up as a member. So heโ€™s a pretty good sales guy too!
However, I then set up an appointment for maintenance and twice Princeton Air canceled me. Iโ€™m now set up for maintenance the end of June. And thatโ€™s after they tried to set me up the end of July and I complained. And this is after Dominic signed me up as a member. Thereโ€™s something very wrong with their business model and I do not consider this good customer service. I will likely have to look for a different serviceโ€ฆ. something more responsive.
Tech (Alex) was on time, courteous, very professional. He let me know that, because of my contract w/McCallister, I would have no extra payment for the part needed.
The repair man, Dominic came out this morning to inspect our AC system. He was extremely knowledgeable, incredibly kind, and explained things very well. I work in construction and can tell you that Dominic is one of the best Iโ€™ve seen in years. Princeton air is very lucky to have him as an employee as he is SUCH AN ASSET to your company.

I also want to give a special thanks to Leah the customer service representative I spoke to. Also extremely kind and helpful. I have had the worst two weeks of my life and two strangers taking the time to kind made my heart smile. Thanks again Leah and Dominic. Chuck our Project Manager has been very kind and knowledgeable through this process as well. I am grateful for the people who work here as they made this pretty easy. Thank you all so much.
Latrell Romulus from Princeton Air did a great job of making sure my AC units were working properly. He was thorough and knowledgeable, and communicated potential areas of concern in a very clear manner.
Great job ! Very knowledgeable and informative. He made sure I was aware of any issues and explained it thoroughly! I look forward to having him again !!

Generator Problems Our Electricians Handle

Standby generators sit idle for long stretches and then work hard when called upon, which is why they fail in specific ways.

Princeton Air’s licensed electricians have resolved every common standby generator issue that comes up across Mercer County.

You have a power outage and the generator doesn’t crank, or it cranks but won’t run. Starting failures trace to battery issues, fuel supply problems, ignition components, or control module faults. Your electrician diagnoses the specific cause and addresses it so your backup power works when the next outage hits.

You hear the generator running but notice it surging, struggling, or cutting off unexpectedly. Running issues come from fuel quality, air intake restrictions, voltage regulator problems, or engine concerns. Your electrician tests the system under load and identifies what’s driving the instability.

You have a generator that starts but doesn’t actually transfer power to your home, or that transfers and then doesn’t switch back when utility power returns. ATS failures are as important as the generator itself because the switch is how power actually reaches your circuits. Your electrician diagnoses and repairs the transfer switch side of the system.

You see an alarm or fault indication on your generator’s control panel. Generac and other modern generators display specific codes that point to specific conditions (low oil, overspeed, overvoltage, sensor failures, and more). Your electrician interprets the code against the manufacturer’s documentation and performs the correct repair.

You find your generator battery dead, or the unit indicating a weak battery. Batteries fail due to age, trickle charger issues, or parasitic draw from the control module. Your electrician tests the battery and charging system and replaces components as needed.

You notice the generator isn’t running its weekly self-test, or it starts the test and shuts down partway through. Exercise failures point to control module issues, fuel problems, or sensor faults. A generator that doesn’t exercise reliably is a generator you can’t count on during a real outage.

Why Princeton Air for Generator Repair

Standby generator work requires electrical expertise and specific generator knowledge.

Princeton Air has served homeowners throughout Mercer County across decades of electrical work.

Your generator repair is handled by a licensed electrician who services standby generators regularly. The license is the baseline; generator-specific experience is what produces reliable repairs on complex equipment.

Princeton Air services Generac standby generators, which represent the majority of residential standby systems installed throughout New Jersey. Factory-aware service supports warranty claims and keeps your equipment performing to specification.

Your generator service includes live-load testing, because a generator that starts on a technician’s command in clear weather isn’t necessarily one that will handle a real power outage. Testing under actual load conditions verifies the full system.

Your generator connects into your electrical panel, and Princeton Air handles both. When generator issues relate to panel or transfer switch conditions, one company addresses the full picture instead of coordinating between trades.

Older standby generators sometimes reach the point where significant repair investment doesn’t make economic sense compared to a newer unit with modern reliability. Your electrician gives you the real picture on your specific equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does my standby generator need professional service?

Most standby generators need annual professional service to stay ready for real operation. Higher-use units or older equipment can benefit from twice-yearly service. Generac and most other manufacturers specify service intervals in the owner’s manual, and following them is typically a warranty requirement.

Why didn’t my generator start during the last outage?

The most common cause is a battery that failed between outages, followed by fuel supply issues (a closed valve, empty propane tank, or fuel line problem) and exercise failures that went unnoticed. An annual professional service test under load catches most of these conditions before an actual outage.

Should I do my own generator maintenance?

Oil and filter changes are within some owners’ ability, but comprehensive service requires a licensed electrician with generator training. Transfer switch testing, battery diagnostics, fuel system verification, and control module evaluation all require specific expertise. DIY maintenance often misses the most important checks.

How long do standby generators last?

A well-maintained residential standby generator typically runs 20 to 30 years or more. Usage hours affect lifespan significantly, which is why exercise cycles are counted and tracked. Neglected units that miss service intervals often fail far sooner, usually during an actual outage when the failure matters most.

Can you service all standby generator brands?

Yes. Princeton Air’s licensed electricians service the residential standby brands installed throughout New Jersey, including Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, and others. Generac specifically is a significant portion of our generator service volume because of how common the brand is in the region.
