How Your Sump Pump Repair Visit Works

A sump pump repair should be thorough and verified under real water before the plumber leaves.

Each step of the visit is built around finding the actual failure and confirming the system protects the basement before the visit ends.

You get in touch by phone or online, and our team member asks about the specifics: what you’re hearing from the pump, when you noticed the issue, and whether you’ve had water in the basement. That information helps your plumber arrive prepared.

Your licensed plumber inspects the pump itself, the float switch, the check valve, the discharge line, and any backup system you have. You receive a written estimate before the repair starts, with a clear explanation of what the work involves.

Your plumber completes the repair and then runs a live-water test, filling the pit and letting the pump activate through a full cycle. You see the pump actually working under load before your plumber leaves, which means the repair is verified rather than assumed.

Cruise was great! He addressed our AC issue quickly and professionally.
We’ve always been satisfied with McAllister and our recent experience since the merger has not changed that. We needed a new condenser for the A/C and they had a cost effective solution and were able to install it quickly.
Very efficient and on time
Princeton Air condition was extraordinary!! I received a very fair quote immediately after Inspection of my HVAC systemby their talented technician. Their technicians were prompts, professional, and polite. They installed a new system with precision and followed up Professionally. Totally proud to work with Princeton.!!
Ryan G came by and provide tips and recommendations so thorough and with full clarity that I believe will benefit in the long haul. Because of this, I was confident to re-sign up for their maintenance program. He was a true professional who is highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic with the work that he is called to do.
We had Norman. He was here a few hours and checked out my HVAC systems for the summer.
He was careful and professional.
Jose and Corey were a great team and genuinely seemed to care about solving our issues.
I had A/C installed in May, but waited to write a review to see how effective the units can be once it's hot out. Now that I've gone through a couple high temperature days where I turned the mini splits on, I can post a review that I am completely satisfied with the installation by Princeton Air Conditioning and the ease of usage of units. I also will add that it was a pleasure to have Mike C. and Christian J. on the job; they, along with the crews that were on site over the course of the two days, were professional, communicative and upfront. I'd recommend this company to anyone looking for services.
Professional and friendly staff
Air conditioning wasn't working and they came out and got it fixed within a day. Ryan did a great job making sure everything was up and running quickly.
The job was done smoothly and efficiently and right on time
Ryan G got our old air conditioner working again quickly during a bad heat wave and, when we were ready, he explained all our options very well and laid the groundwork to make it easy for us to have installed a new air conditioner. Plus he rescued our cat three times when our cat tried to get out through the garage. He was very kind to all our pets and to us. Thank you, Ryan G!
Dominic was extremely pleasant, professional, and thorough,. He was also quite efficient. He quickly diagnosed the situation and was able to correct it. He also took the time to patiently explain my thermostat to me. Then he signed me up as a member. So he’s a pretty good sales guy too!
However, I then set up an appointment for maintenance and twice Princeton Air canceled me. I’m now set up for maintenance the end of June. And that’s after they tried to set me up the end of July and I complained. And this is after Dominic signed me up as a member. There’s something very wrong with their business model and I do not consider this good customer service. I will likely have to look for a different service…. something more responsive.
Tech (Alex) was on time, courteous, very professional. He let me know that, because of my contract w/McCallister, I would have no extra payment for the part needed.
The repair man, Dominic came out this morning to inspect our AC system. He was extremely knowledgeable, incredibly kind, and explained things very well. I work in construction and can tell you that Dominic is one of the best I’ve seen in years. Princeton air is very lucky to have him as an employee as he is SUCH AN ASSET to your company.

I also want to give a special thanks to Leah the customer service representative I spoke to. Also extremely kind and helpful. I have had the worst two weeks of my life and two strangers taking the time to kind made my heart smile. Thanks again Leah and Dominic. Chuck our Project Manager has been very kind and knowledgeable through this process as well. I am grateful for the people who work here as they made this pretty easy. Thank you all so much.
Latrell Romulus from Princeton Air did a great job of making sure my AC units were working properly. He was thorough and knowledgeable, and communicated potential areas of concern in a very clear manner.
Great job ! Very knowledgeable and informative. He made sure I was aware of any issues and explained it thoroughly! I look forward to having him again !!
Ryan did a fantastic job for us. He was patient and thorough. Thank you, way to go.
This is an outstanding company on all levels.
The team at Princeton Air Conditioning has been excellent. Wilver Matos was great, knowledgeable, customer service oriented and willing to help. He was also preemptive in solutioning comprehensively for the water heater installation especially since there was some mix-up originally but he worked to sort it out.
The technician Alfredo is great
So far it has been very good!!!!
Mike showed up right on time. He was personable and knowledgable. He took his time to explain the different options for water heater replacement, and answered my questions fully. All good.
This was a follow up call on an issue we had with a new HVAC system we had installed a little over a year ago for our upstairs that couldn’t be fixed without Tech Support from both Princeton Air and Lenox. Jose showed up right on time and went to work with Lenox to determine our problem. It was determined that our new system would have to have the coils replaced and we would not be responsible for any repairs. Jose was extremely pleasant to deal with and took his time to explain to us what probably caused this issue. With technicians like Jose now working for Princeton Air we are very happy customers again.
Thanks so much for the EXCELLENT service from Norman. He was very knowledgeable and so friendly. Really nice guy. Thank you Norman and thank you Princeton Air.

Sump Pump Problems Our Plumbers Resolve

Sump pumps sit idle for long stretches and then have to work hard when the weather demands it, which produces its own set of failure patterns.

Princeton Air’s licensed plumbers know what goes wrong with sump pumps across Mercer County, from older cast iron units in prewar homes to modern high-output pumps handling high-groundwater properties.

You hear your sump cycling on and off repeatedly even in dry weather. Constant cycling typically means a stuck float switch, a check valve that isn’t holding water back in the discharge line, or a high water table keeping your pit full. Your plumber identifies the cause and corrects it so the pump runs only when it should.

You hear silence when you expect the pump to activate, even with water in the pit. Float switch failures, power supply issues, motor burnouts, and debris blocking the impeller can each keep the pump from starting. Your plumber tests the system methodically to find the specific failure rather than guessing.

You see water escaping from the pipe that carries sump water out of the house. Discharge line leaks come from failing check valves, cracked PVC, or joints that have separated over time. Your plumber traces the leak, replaces the compromised section, and verifies the line carries water correctly.

You hear grinding, rattling, or a motor that doesn’t sound right. Grinding usually means debris in the impeller or a bearing failure. Rattling often points to a loose check valve. A motor noise that has changed character signals wear that needs evaluation. Your plumber reads the sound, inspects the components, and recommends the right response.

You have a battery backup or a water-powered backup, and it isn’t responding when it should. Battery units fail when the battery ages beyond its service life or when the charging circuit stops working correctly. Water-powered units can fail from supply line issues or valve problems. Your plumber tests the backup under simulated conditions and restores it to reliable operation.

You came downstairs and found water, and now you need to know what happened. A flood event usually points to total pump failure, backup system failure, a severed or kinked discharge line, or a power outage that outlasted your backup. Your plumber diagnoses what happened and puts the system in a position to prevent a repeat.

Why Princeton Air for Sump Pump Repair

A sump pump is the equipment you count on to protect what’s in your basement, and the team that services it matters.

Princeton Air has built its reputation on thorough work and tested results, which is exactly what sump pumps demand.

Princeton Air’s plumbers have serviced sump pumps in every kind of basement found in this area: older stone foundations, newer concrete slabs, finished spaces, and unfinished utility areas. Each situation has its own considerations, and our plumbers work with yours in mind.

Your sump pump repair is handled by a licensed plumber who actually tests the system under water load rather than assuming it works. A pump that looks fine sitting dry can still fail to activate under real conditions, which is why live-water testing is part of the standard repair.

Sump pumps don’t work in isolation. The float switch, the check valve, the discharge line, and the backup system all affect whether the pump actually protects your basement. Our plumbers evaluate the complete system rather than just the failed component.

Princeton Air covers plumbing as well as HVAC, electrical, and indoor air quality, which is useful when sump pump issues overlap with electrical circuits. One team, one relationship, across the trades your home needs.

Your sump pump has a finite service life, and some failures on older units make replacement the better call. Our plumbers tell you directly when that’s the case, so your decision reflects the actual condition of the equipment.

Full Sump Pump and Basement Protection Services

Your basement protection extends beyond the pump itself, and Princeton Air handles every part of it.

The same licensed plumbers who repair your sump pump install and maintain the related equipment.

When you’re adding a sump pump for the first time, you receive an installation sized for your basement’s groundwater situation, with a properly routed discharge line and appropriate backup considerations.

When an aging sump pump has reached the point where replacement makes sense, you get a clean swap with an appropriate unit for your home’s demands.

You can add a battery backup system to your existing sump pump so basement protection continues during power outages, which is when many flood events actually happen.

Your annual sump pump service includes a full system test, float switch inspection, check valve verification, and battery condition checks on backup systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a typical sump pump last?

Most residential sump pumps run 7 to 10 years of regular service. Pumps that work harder, including those handling higher water tables or frequent storm cycling, tend to fall on the shorter end; pumps in drier basements often reach the longer end. Battery backup batteries typically need replacement every 3 to 5 years regardless of the pump’s age. Mercer County’s groundwater conditions and storm exposure put most homes in this area squarely in that 7-to-10-year range.

How often should my sump pump be tested?

You should test your pump at least twice a year: once in spring before the rainy season and once in fall before winter storms and spring thaw. An annual professional inspection with live-water testing catches issues that self-testing can miss, particularly around the check valve, float switch calibration, and discharge line condition.

Do I actually need a battery backup?

If the power goes out in a storm, your primary sump pump stops working at exactly the moment you need it most. Battery backup systems run for hours on a single charge and keep your basement protected when the grid is down. For homes with finished basements or significant groundwater issues, a backup is almost always worth the investment.

Can I hear warning signs of a failing sump pump?

Often, yes. A pump that has started running constantly, a motor that sounds different than it used to, rattling from the check valve, or water taking longer to clear the pit than it used to are all early signs of a developing problem. Addressing those signs promptly is usually less expensive than responding to an actual flood.

What should I do if my basement is flooding right now?

Shut off the power to the basement if water is approaching electrical outlets, move valuables above the water line, and call Princeton Air immediately. A team member can walk you through what to do while a plumber heads your way. Emergency service is available 24/7 for exactly these situations.
